During my visit to Austin, Texas last October, I was overjoyed to stumble upon the life sized Chia Cow by Nathan Alcantara. Chia Cow is part of CowParade Austin, an art project on display throughout the city by over 60 local artists.

Since meeting Chia Cow, I have decided we need a life sized Chia Yorkie here at 123 house. Easier said than done.

I think it is no coincidence that the following word shares these two definitions.

Pill (noun)
1. Tiresome and disagreeable
2. A fuzzy ball caused by the rolling up of abraded surface fibers

It has been a long battle between me and those irritating little balls that inevitably show up on my knitwear. It doesn't seem to matter how expensive the sweater is, the fiber it is made out of, or the activity I am doing while wearing it..those pills aleays make an appearance.

I have tried everything...sweater shavers, sweater combs, several types lint brushes with unsatifactory results. Even the dry cleaner told me they don't know of a way to deal with it on fine fibers such as cashmere or thin wool.

After doing some research, I came across the Sweater Stone by The Laundress. Although it's $18 price tag seemed a little high, I figured it was worth the gamble if it really worked. In hind sight, it is a small price to pay to get all your sweaters looking new again with very little time and effort. It even worked on my fine knits.

I would highly recommend the Sweater Stone, in my mind it is a small miracle.

They have several other interesting products as well...scented vinegar, horse hair lint brushes...yes, please!

Simply, I am in love with these fashionable Italian leather flats by Tieks which practically fold up small enough to fit in your pocket.

I ordered a pair of the Cardinal Red flats before my trip to Italy. They are incredibly comfortable (cushioned soles), easy to pack (small) and high quality (top grain leather). The cut of the shoes are universally flattering and I adore the signature turquoise soles and tab on the back of each pair.

I recently read in Oprah magazine that you can save $29 per pair with code word OPRAH...I might just need another pair.

I haven't celebrated Lent in a traditional way for many years now, but there are some rituals I must practice. One of them is observing Shrove Tuesday. Always the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday and before Lent begins, it is often known as Pancake Tuesday and a day I have enjoyed since I was a child.

This year we made Bobby Flay's Lemon-Blueberry-Ricotta-Buttermilk Pancakes with Blueberry-Cassis Relish and Blueberry Maple Syrup...what a mouthful, the best mouthful of pancakes I have ever had in my life. As you can see below, we paired the cakes with thick-cut applewood smoked bacon.

Save this for the next time you are having breakfast for dinner or you're looking for an outstanding brunch recipe, truly outstanding.

An abrupt and painful fall on ice outside our front door last week quickly justified the purchase of a new pair of 'practical' winter boots. Easier said than done. It is a difficult task to find a pair of boots that are warm, have a good tread and are stylish. While I find a lot of winter boots cute, they are a little clunky for me to wear during the day when I am out on calls for work.

In come the Sorel Firenzy. Sorel was the last company I thought would have something that would fit my needs in the style department. The Firenzy, with details inspired by a pair of gloves spotted in Italy, are incredibly warm, comfortable and easy on the eyes.

I knit. I am on day 13, I am a new knitter, an infant.

In 13 days I have managed to practice a lot of my stitches, learn about knit graffiti, roamed several knit shops, and found some really cool projects to work on.

One of the company's I have learned about is Wool and the Gang. They have luxe yarns, fun projects (that you'd actually wear) and a hip corporate culture.

I had no idea that knitting could be so cool. Will this be my vehicle for rebellion?

the hidden possibility of a speeding ticket

A couple of months ago, I started a journey of transformation. I have been amazed as many things in my life evolve and have new and profound meaning. I will share my experiences from time to time under the category of 'possibility'.

Today while I was driving to an appointment for work, I was pulled over by a police officer. I was completely confused about why. I quickly learned that I had been speeding, however this information was delivered to me in a very respectful and compassionate way from an officer that was genuinely concerned that I was in a hurry to get somewhere.

When he returned to the car to give me my citation, he explained that he reduced the charges. He explained that he does this whenever he can, because he believes it is his job to positively impact the lives of others and not hurt them financially or upset them. Wow. I happily (yes, I said happily) took my ticket, wished him a good day and left for my appointment.

As I was driving away, I realized what an impactful interaction we had. This officer has taken to heart the fact that he can be a cause for good in the lives of others despite the less than pleasant work he often does. He simply asked me to be responsible and accountable for my actions, and that I something I can do.

Tomorrow I will call the police department to tell them about my truly extraordinary experience, and I hope that my action will positively impact his life.

From this experience, I have created a possibility of positively impacting the lives of others through my work (even in less than perfect situations).

This weekend Josh and I left the city to go up to Snowbird Resort and celebrate our first wedding anniversary. The first time we ever went away for a weekend it was to Snowbird and on our wedding night we also stayed there, so it has become a bit of a tradition.

We enjoyed fresh alpine air, mountain views, an outdoor hot tub, excellent food, our favorite cake in the whole world and of course spending time together.

I don't know how I got so lucky, being on top of the world with this man.

A few weeks ago at an end of summer BBQ, I tried my friend's Quinoa Salad and immediately asked the recipe. It is so flavorful and packed full of super-foods, you just can't go wrong with this recipe.

{petite arugula salad, rotisserie chicken and quinoa salad}

Quinoa Salad

1-1/2 c. quinoa
1-1/2 c. canned black beans
1-1/2 tbsp. red wine vinegar
1-1/2 c. cooked corn
1 red bell pepper, seeded and chopped
4 scallions, chopped
1 tsp. garlic, minced
1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper
1/4 c. fresh cilantro
1/3 c. lime juice
1/2 tsp. salt
1-1/4 tsp. ground cumin
1/3 c. olive oil

Rinse quinoa in fine sieve with cold water until it runs clear. Prepare quinoa, boil in 2-1/2 cups of water until all water is absorbed. Fluff quinoa with fork and place in large bowl to cool.

Meanwhile, toss black beans with vinegar, salt and pepper. Mix in red pepper, corn, scallions, garlic, cayenne pepper, and cilantro. Toss well and then add to quinoa.

In a small bowl whisk lime juice and cumin, add olive oil in a stream while whisking. drizzle over salad, toss well and season with salt and pepper.

Bring to room temperature before serving.

international sheepdog championships

Yesterday Josh and I attended the Soldier Hollow Classic, International Sheepdog Competition in Heber, Utah. We have never been before and didn't know what to expect but thought we would go check it out. It turned out to be a beautiful day, so nice to spend in the mountains eating Aussie Pies and watching man's best friend hard at work.

Dogs travelled from all over the world to compete. It was impressive to see them herding sheep (and ducks!). They were given signals with a whistle by their owner and were not allowed to bite or nip any of the animals. They had to drive the sheep around a course within a prescribed amount on time, separate out 5 sheep from 16 and then herd them into the pen with the help of their owner. I could learn a little about being patient from those dogs.

In an effort to buy less of what we don't need, I have found more joy in shopping for groceries lately. This has resulted in almost daily trips to the market to browse, explore and buy, somehow there is a way to justify any purchase that comes from the market.

We have found some new favorites that you must try. We have come to love these products not only for the taste and quality of the food itself, but also the stories and people behind them...oh and the beautiful packaging too.

Finding joy in these little things has been nourishing to our bodies and souls.

I like butter. I enjoy eggs, milk and meat too. Although I eat vegetarian meals a good majority of the time, I am not prepared to give up animal products in my baked goods.

When my good friend suggested I try a vegan cookie recipe from The Kind Diet, I smiled and nodded and didn't think much more about it, that is until she made them for me. I was pleasantly surprised with the taste and texture, in fact I have thought about those cookies several times since she made them for me. Tonight I finally made them for myself. They are a nice change to work into your baking repertoire...give them a try, you might just love them.

Before I travelled to Canada last week for work I decided to pick up a new book to take. While wandering through the store I spotted The Hunger Games, a title someone had recommended, but a science fiction story that didn't really appeal to me. For some reason I decided to go ahead and purchase it. Wow. I am so glad I didn't miss it.

It is the kind of story that has me concerned for the characters when I am not reading it, I keep thinking about them and what will happen. This fictional work is both surreal and believable, so glad there are two more books after this one.

This week...

...we cared for a baby bird named Donald that had been abandoned by his mom, we hand fed him every few hours in hopes that we could save him, he passed away.

...when picking up Henri from his vet appointment a woman brought in her darling chocolate lab/husky mix puppy named Chocolate who had just been attacked by two pitbulls. The little guy was badly injured and she had no way to pay for his medical care so another lady and I paid to help him.

...on a way to a meeting I saw a dog get hit by a car, I could not tell how badly he had been injured, he slunk away and I was unable to find him.

My heart is breaking for each of these little guys, I wish I could help them all.

Edie Falco is fascinating and the episodes, at 30 minutes each, move along quickly and are a small time commitment. Netflix it now!

A few weeks ago Josh and I were at Target shopping to some new shower gel, the shower gel in question was for the man of the house, so we went to find an appropriately masculine scent for him to use on his shower puff. During our survey of the offerings, we came across the Dove Men+ Care Active Clean Dual Sided Shower Tool. Wow, sounds serious doesn't it? We laughed as we read about it's intense scrubbing power, and ability to build the perfect amount of lather. Clearly this was not some pathetic puff, real men need tools. Josh promptly and proudly added one to the basket.

48 hour film project

Two evenings this week I volunteered with The 48 Hour Film Project. I didn't know what to expect as I had never heard of the festival before.

In a nut shell, it is an international film project where teams write, shoot, edit and score a film in just 48 hours.

On Friday night, teams receive a character, a prop, a line of dialogue and a genre, all to include in their film. 48 hours later the films are turned in and prepared for screenings at a later date.

While most of the people at the event were part to the film industry, it is open to the public. As a lover of film, I found the project to be fascinating, the films outstanding.

arizona weekend

Last week (after returning from Chicago) Josh and I traveled to Scottsdale, Arizona for a weekend of sun and fun with two of our close friends.

Thursday evening (before Josh joined me) I stayed at the Arizona Biltmore, a hotel built in 1929 and had Frank Lloyd Wright serve as consulting architect on the project. It is such a special place... beautiful structures, gardens and pools with a touch of old Hollywood glamour. I just love walking the grounds, and cocktails on the patio in the evening aren't so bad either.

Friday night we had an outstanding dinner at Olive & Ivy.

On Saturday morning Josh and I along with one of our friends went on a nice 5 mile run. Well, the idea was nice. Running in Arizona heat was quite oppressive, but a challenge none the less. Lucky for you we did not photo document this part of the trip.

Next we went to visit Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin West, something we've meant to do on previous trips to Arizona. It was incredibly interesting.

We went all out on Saturday night with old and new friends at the Orange Sky Restaurant at the new Talking Stick Resort. The food was amazing and the panoramic views of the Sonoran Desert are unbelievable.

We couldn't resist brunch at the Hotel Valley Ho before we caught our flight home.

Perfect.

Everyone who knows me knows that I am sun-phobic and have been so for years...part vanity, part precaution. I am always on the look out for new preventative measures.

Last week I read about Sun Pill. Have you heard about this? Seems like it would be a useful layer of protection if it actually works. It makes sense that you could protect your skin from the inside out, no? This might be a question for the dermatologist...hmmm.

I like the idea of the Sun Pill, however I also enjoyed the idea of the Thigh Master and the lottery but they haven't seemed to pay off.

When we were in Denmark last month we planned one of our days in Copenhagen around a self guided Design walking tour. Our first stop was the 5-star Radisson SAS Royal Hotel designed by Danish architect Arne Jacobsen. Jacobsen's influence can be seen in everything down to the textiles, cutlery and door handles.

If you know to ask and do so nicely you can be escorted to Room 606 of the hotel, the room has been completely preserved and is in the exact state it was when the hotel was finished in 1961. We spent a few minutes sitting in the Egg chairs, Swan chairs, and the discontinued Droplet chair. The gentleman from the hotel was very patient while we took our photos and explored every corner of that space.

This is an absolute must see for any design enthusiast.

We have a couple items over here at 123 house that we would LOVE to get rid of. If you're interested, please e-mail or leave a comment.

First up is a leather club chair and ottoman with distressed leather. It has been lovingly cared for and lives in our guest room so is rarely used. The chair and ottoman were originally $1500.00, we are asking $400 but we can play "let's make a deal" if you have other ideas. :)

Next is a large brand new Blik wall decal in it's original packaging. I purchased this for my office last year and decided to go in another direction. You can read specifics on this product here. You can buy it online for $65.00 or from me for, I don't know...$25?

claudy jongstra installation

I recently wrote about the work of Claudy Jongstra. I was so glad that I remembered there are public installations of her work in the Netherlands. When we were in The Haugue we visited the Central Government and Library Building where the entire vertical surface of a wall was veneered in hand felted wool. It is a beautiful thing to have such works of art available to everyone in a public building.

The handcrafted installation was a stunning contrast to the sleek shell of the structure. Amazing.

At a barbeque this past weekend, I was adoring a friends sassy and obviously expensive strappy sandals. Fast forward a couple hours when someone else comments on them and she confesses that she purchased them from Target! The Cynthia Vincent Strappy Ring Flat Sandals can be yours for less than $25. Seems to me that this is one of the best summer deals out there right now.

(p.s. strappy flats form Vincent's regular line are in the $200-$300 range)

tulips

One of the biggest reasons we scheduled our trip to Holland for late April is so that we could visit the tulip fields. We saw the fields and visited Keukenhof, a park in Lisse with over 7 million flowers in bloom for only 8 weeks a year.

We were surprised to learn that that the tulips grown in the fields are simply a by-product of the tulip industry. Shortly after blooming, the flowers are "decapitated" so that the bulbs can be harvested and sent all over the world.

Our day spent wandering among the flowers was very peaceful, a day I will never forget. It is rare to be surrounded by such beauty.

I have adored the work of Dutch fashion designer turned fine artist, Claudy Jonstra for years. As I have mentioned before, felt is one of my favorite things in the world and this is her exclusive medium.

She controls everything about her work, from the raw materials to the finished product. She tends her own flock of Drenthe Heath sheep, estabished her own dyeworks using natural dyes from the plants she grows, and forms each piece by hand.

I think I will have to go it alone in financing this, but it is so worth it. Now, which color to get...

At a pizza party we hosted last week we tried a new salad recipe from Food Network, the Feta, Black Olive and Oregano Salad is also known as Pizza Parlor Salad. It was fast, easy and the perfect pairing to pizza, a recipe we will make again. I couldn't begin to guess how many people asked for the recipe.

I have known about TOMS shoes for quite some time now. Their philanthropical roots are truly admirable, but I never really paid attention to the shoes until last week when Josh and I were out to dinner, and I noticed them on a girl at the next table. The more research I did on these simple little shoes, the more I found that people loved them...raving about the comfort and fit. course a'lure

This weekend we brought Henri and Franklin to the Course a'Lure competition at The Humane Society of Utah. The obstacle lure course utilizes a pulley system with a fake furry rodent used to lure the pups. The dogs then chase the lure through the course while they are timed. You can enter your dog as many times as you like and a good portion of the proceeds go to HSU.

For the first round, Henri was a little confused, so I ran the course with him, Franklin was completely uninterested and didn't make it past the starting line. After a very poor first time, and a bathroom break in the middle of the lap, Henri got the idea and wanted to compete more. He went crazy!

Henri was an amazing competitor and improved his time by 50%, Franklin was a model spectator. Although, Henri didn't win for time (he was considerable shorter than the athletes), he did win a ribbon for Most Precious Competitor.

The pages have been flying around here, I just can't read fast enough. Despite my best efforts, I still have several books in the queue.

I just re-read Under the Banner of Heaven, I found it even more interesting this time around since I have been living in Utah for quite some time now. I would highly recommend this book.

A Single Man was a different sort of read for me. I quite enjoyed the writing, I found it to be more philosophical and obscure than other books I have read lately. This is a sad book but not in a traditional sense. I am really interested to see how they made it into a film.

I have wanted to read The Devil in the White City for a long time. I am only 50 pages into it and can't pull my nose out of the book. Life is so much more interesting than fiction.

Over the last few months, I have really been trying to watch what I eat. That means less of some of my favorite things which unfortunately includes hotdogs. Every trip to Costco was a sad day when I could not indulge.

Where there is a will, there is a way. Last week I discovered that Boar's Head Skinless Beef Frankfurters combined with a whole wheat high fiber hotdog bun, can be enjoyed for only 200 calories! I wasn't sure what to expect, sometimes it is better not to eat your favorite things at all then have to suffer through a tasteless substitute. These dogs are outstanding, reminiscent of being at a sporting event outstanding, make me want a cold beer outstanding and I don't even drink beer.

Dear Mrs. Meyers,

I am sorry I judged you so harshly. For years I have seen your fancy pants products on the shelves of small boutique stores and assumed they were simply over priced soap in pretty bottles. Honestly, the only one I hurt was myself. I am the one who missed out while others had lovely smelling, non-toxic cleaning agents in their home.

I recently tried several of your products and I love them. The house smells clean without the chemical smell, the scent lingers for days. I have also discovered that if I purchase your products from larger stores they are actually quite competitive in price. Your products have almost made me want to start cleaning the house myself (just kidding).

Again, my sincere apologies. I am so glad we are finally friends.

For all the make up products I have tried in my life, I have never found a mascara that I absolutely love, until recently. My darling Melissa told me I had to try Bobbi Brown's Extreme Party Mascara. I have to admit that I did not jump on the task, I was quite skeptical.

Turns out it really is the best mascara (no question) that I have ever used. It adds impressive volume and length (like artificial lashes) and the best part is that there is no clumping or flaking...ever. You can add layer on layer and it goes on smooth, in fact it was made so that you can even re-apply. Totally worth the money, totally worth the drive, totally worth a shipping charge.

For a while now I have really liked the work of Alexis Bittar, but this was the piece that really got me, the Small Horseshoe Necklace.

The clean lines and simple shapes really appeal to me. Many of the pieces are made from Lucite which has been hand carved and painted. There is something so gentle, soft, feminine about each one. I was surprised and impressed to learn that Alexis Bittar is a man, I had assumed the artist behind it was female.

This particular necklace also comes with a 3" extender, which I think is absolutely genius!

I always keep my eyes open for modern holiday decorations. My collection is very small as they are hard to come by.

Today, I stumbled upon an etsy shop (via apartment therapy) that sells handmade pottery pieces like the little bunny vase below. I love that the essence of a bunny is captured in the most simple way...a little Easter treasure.

There were 4 friends chatting online, one in Canada, one at home in the Rocky Mountains, one in a chair in the sky, and one working late at the office... sounds like the begining of a tall tale, but it's really what we were doing tonight. The things that have become so normal for us are truly amazing.

Just yesterday one of my friends went on a cell phone coffee date. I resolved an insurance claim with e-mail and regularly pay my bills with the push of a button.

I am on the road for work this week in Washington and Montana. One of my favorite things to do during my free time is explore and find special places in the towns I visit.

Today I came across and amazing food co-op, Main Market, in Spokane. I had an tasty lunch at the large communal table, it was a delightful experience. The table had a very thoughtful poem scribed into the surface. It made me think about a kitchen table in a whole new way...perhaps you will too.

Perhaps the World Ends Here

The world begins at a kitchen table. No matter what,
we must eat to live.

The gifts of earth are brought and prepared, set on the
table so it has been since creation, and it will go on.

We chase chickens or dogs away from it. Babies teethe

One of my dear friends and fellow reps co-hosted a party for about 200 clients last night. Our evening was planned around a private screening of the new Alice in Wonderland film in 3D.

Before the show we invited everyone to a Mad Hatter Tea Party. We served various types of candy, miniature cakes and sweet beverages. The evening was a smashing success.
